"Layers Of Lies", recorded in the winter of 2004/2005, was the first self-produced DARKANE album. A new studio had been built and the band spent evenings and weekends there to complete their fourth release.
The ambition was to create a mix between the former three albums with a more brutal and futuristic sound. "We wanted to develop our sound while sticking to our style", Christofer stated in a lot of interviews.
A lot of work was put into the vocal arrangements and Andreas Sydow sounded better than ever with his aggressive roars. A choir and an orchestra were once again hired for the bombastic yet haunting intro "Amnesia Of The Wildoerian Apocalypse".
Blabermouth stated in a review of "Layers Of Lies":
"Songwriting wise, DARKANE keeps things relatively simple in the verse-chorus-verse sense but doesn't let up the intensity for any whisper/crooned verses or crossover tracks. Songs like "Fading Dimensions" and "Secondary Effects" contain blistering thrash tempos and memorable choruses, in that completely synthetic but strangely appealing melodic robot scream... At the end of the day, "Layers Of Lies" is one catchy, infectious, irresistible, charismatic ass-kicker of a record!"
Following the release of "Layers Of Lies" in the autumn of 2005, DARKANE produced a video for the track "Secondary Effects", and then went on their first full-length US tour with Fear Factory, Strapping Young lad and Soilwork, which was successful for the band.
