Crazy Legs, Jeff Beck’s 1993 studio set with the Big Town Playboys - a six-piece, British rhythm and blues revival group - is an album of Gene Vincent songs. The album is considered to be a tribute to Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps, and in particular to Vincent's early guitarist Cliff Gallup, who Beck recognized as his biggest influence. The album featured numbers that Vincent had written or co-written, plus the songs of others that he had recorded with the Blue Caps. A couple of months prior to the album’s release, on April 23rd ’93, after practicing for four days on the UK south coast, Jeff Beck and BTP were ready for their premier live performance as a temporary collective. Doing most of the Crazy Legs record - the Vincent/Gallup tribute - they rounded out their set with many other numbers from the era, from people like Carl Perkins, the Johnny Burnette Trio and a number of others. Wanting to see if they could pull it off live, Jeff Beck opted for a club atmosphere venue at a trendy spot in Paris, called La Cigale. At this juncture they didn’t know that the planned major U.S., nine city tour, beginning in Cliff Gallup's home town of Norfolk, VA and ending in LA, would unfortunately not proceed as planned in the ensuing months.
