Following two highly-acclaimed and strong-selling Kent CDs covering all of his surviving Fame recordings, we now turn to the material that Jimmy Hughes cut for Stax’s subsidiary Volt between 1968 and 1970. The final part of our Hughes trilogy starts with all 11 tracks from Jimmy’s sole Volt album “Something Special”, adds both sides of a 1970 non-album 45 cut at Royal Studios with the Hi Rhythm Section, and tops the lot with a staggering 13 previously unissued recordings that have remained in the Stax vaults for over 40 years. These finished masters and work in progress demos were cut at Stax, Sun, Ardent, FAME and Hi, all legendary locations for fans of southern soul. Jimmy worked on these sides with some of the most notable writers and musicians of soul’s golden era, including Isaac Hayes and David Porter, Duane Allman, Charles Chalmers, Steve Cropper, vocalists Jeanie Greene and Sandy Posey, the Memphis Horns and the Hi Rhythm Section under the supervision of their (and the MGs) drummer Al Jackson Jr. They are of the highest quality from start to finish.
