Mike Rutherford, renowned as the bassist and guitarist of Genesis, launched a successful solo career in the mid-1980s exploring a more pop-oriented sound with his band Mike & The Mechanics. Formed in 1985, the group became an outlet for a different musical vision, blending rock, pop, and soulful melodies. The original lineup featured Rutherford, vocalists Paul Carrack and Paul Young, keyboardist Adrian Lee, and drummer Peter Van Hooke.
Mike & The Mechanics quickly found success with their self-titled debut album in 1985, followed by the hit-packed The Living Years in 1988 which gave rise to their most iconic song, "The Living Years". The band continued to release music to critical and commercial acclaim with Word of Mouth following in 1991. Their fourth album, Beggar on a Beach of Gold (1995), brought further success, with the single "Over My Shoulder" enjoying significant airplay in the U.K. and solidifying their place as a pop-rock powerhouse.
