Dead landscapes, great expanses, barren thickets, rocky precipices, a river, a high valley, abandoned ruins and solitary statues. Add to that the whisper of the cold wind and you may imagine the setting of Knell, the second album by Swiss ensemble Nucleus Torn. ‘Knell’ is a far gloomier far more desolate and threatening compared to its predecessor ‘Nihil’. This oppressive atmosphere is the outcome of the marked contrast between loud furious passages and moments of total calm, grief and depression. In addition a harmonic richness was harnessed for ‘Knell’. Combined with motifs that are often based on unusual tonal scales, the band has created compositions that consciously evoke negative emotions. That we’re dealing here with musically ambitious and visionary artists is clear. Actually Nucleus Torn have always striven to combine the depth of Classical music the energy of Rock and the joys of sound experiments to create a homogenous total work of art. With ‘Knell’ the ensemble has come closer to this goal than ever before. Thus mastermind Fredy Schnyder is rightfully proud of his work; “This album creates worlds that haven’t been explored before. Every listener following us there will sooner or later find access to the emotional depth of ‘Knell’.
