Rory Gallagher began his musical career in the late 1960s with the formation of Taste, an Irish blues trio from Cork that showcased his exceptional guitar skills and raw blues-rock energy. Taste quickly gained recognition for their dynamic live performances, with Gallagher's fiery guitar work and passionate vocals leading the charge. Despite achieving critical success with the albums Taste (1969) and On The Boards (1970), internal tensions led to the band's breakup in 1970.

After Taste dissolved, Gallagher launched his solo career, marked by his 1971 self-titled debut album. His sound evolved with a raw, rootsy approach, blending blues, rock, and folk influences. However, it was with the releases Blueprint (1973) and Tattoo (1973) that Gallagher truly began to define his distinctive style. Blueprint displayed his mastery of blues-rock, with tracks like "Walk on Hot Coals" showcasing his virtuosity while maintaining a gritty, soulful quality. Tattoo, released the same year, revealed a broader musical range, incorporating elements of rock, jazz, and folk into his raw blues-based sound.

Despite recording two albums in 1973, Gallagher still found time to tour extensively, travelling across Europe and the USA in support of Blueprint. In September, just two months before the release of Tattoo, Gallagher undertook a short residency at the rock hotspot Richards Club in Atlanta, Georgia, performing six nights in a row. While all of the shows were memorable, the standout was undoubtedly the opening night on the 10th, where Gallagher was in particularly explosive form. Performing tracks from his self-titled debut, Blueprint, and the forthcoming Tattoo, the show was an electrifying experience driven by his unmatched guitar mastery. Broadcast too on local radio, the night was a mesmerising display of virtuosity that demonstrated exactly why Rory Gallagher was such a formidable live performer, captivating the audience from start to finish.
