The Shadow Lizzards' second album. They describe their style as "vintage rock"—a fitting term for the 60s and 70s-influenced sound, which is composed of elements such as classic hard or blues rock as well as psychedelic sounds. The songs captivate with their powerful, rough charm, which does not try to hide the proximity to the role models from the past, but just like the contemporary stars of the blues and retro rock scene, such as the British The Brew. With Someone's Heartache, the trio consisting of Jochen Leistner (vocals, organ, bass, harmonica), Kris Karla (guitar) and Oliver Pfeiffer (drums, percussion) takes a huge step forward. Founded by Leistner in 2015, the trio now presents eight pieces with sophisticated arrangements and catchy character. The proof of this is provided by tracks such as the briskly funky "Train Song", the atmospherically starting "No One Can Save Me", which then comes up with clever Americana set pieces, finally developing a real anthem character, or the richly grooving blues rocker "Who is Who", which boasts an epic solo and a cleverly attractive tempo from time to time. With their new, self-directed work, they have created an unmistakable identity for themselves. The Shadow Lizzards act here courageously and with an astonishing certainty in terms of tempo changes, style breaks, and loud-quiet contrasts. Everything always sounds 100% organic, never heady or even somehow forced. The ease with which the musicians, all of whom are endowed with different preferences and influences, proceed so harmoniously is palpable. After more than 100 live shows, it will be exciting to see where the three of them take inspiration when they perform their new titles live. Someone's Heartache will delight every fan of hearty rock music and deeply emotional blues sounds.
