An offshoot of Post-Punk movement in the early 1980s, Goth quickly became a label for bands as diverse as The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees and, later, The Sisters Of Mercy, as well as for the music they played and for the followers of these groups. With the opening of London’s Batcave club in 1982 the scene develop into a genre of its own and the most all-encompassing of sub-cultures, Identifiable to outsiders by an obsession with things morbid and a penchant for black attire. Goths were in fact the latest in a cultural lineage stretching back to such literary figures as Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Baudelaire and ETA Hoffmann.
