Widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, Marshall Bruce Mathers III – known professionally as Eminem – is credited with popularizing hip-hop in Middle America. Among the best-selling music artists of all time, Eminem’s popularity peaked in the 2000s when he was the best-selling music artist of the decade in the United States. He was also the first artist to have ten albums consecutively debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
After a five-year hiatus from releasing records due to writer’s block, Eminem released Relapse in 2009 which quickly became a commercial behemoth, selling 608,000 copies in its first week. The album's production was mainly handled by his mentor Dr. Dre, with additional work from Eminem himself and others. Plans for a follow-up album, Relapse 2 were teased, but were later scrapped after the mixed reception to Relapse. Instead, Eminem decided to record an entirely new album, one that would have a distinct identity rather than be a continuation of the predecessor. Recovery was released a year later on June 18th, 2010, and reached number one in 16 countries, becoming the best-selling album worldwide in 2010.
Fresh off his return to form with Recovery, Eminem announced a short co-headlining tour with Jay-Z that same year called ‘The Home & Home Tour.’ The tour consisted of two shows at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, and two shows at Yankee Stadium in New York City, the artists’ respective home cities. The tour was an enormous spectacle, with two of hip-hop’s greatest artists performing together, joined by an abundance of special guests and performing mammoth setlists that documented each artist’s career to date.
